Muskegon County Awarded Funding from the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan to Further Agricultural Economic Development
Muskegon, MI – Muskegon County representatives traveled to Lansing in January to present a strategic business and marketing plan application for the Port of Muskegon and Muskegon County Wastewater Management System to the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan in January. Staff provided an overview of domestic and foreign market access potential with the Port of Muskegon to growers across Michigan. This award supports position of west Michigan as a multi-nodal logistics hub in the Mid-West.
As the County works to align and expand its infrastructure capacity, specifically the Port of Muskegon and Muskegon Wastewater Management System, targeting agricultural commodities will help to diversity the County’s economy. This award will allow stakeholders and leaders in Muskegon County and growers across Michigan to focus on how the Port of Muskegon can accommodate large aggregate agricultural products through the Port. This award will also target potential food processing and value added corn product industry development at the Wastewater Treatment System.
Building on work to attract data centers to the treatment site, food processing is a feasible development target for Muskegon County Wastewater Treatment System. As the county continues to approach economic development in innovative ways, Corn Marketing Program of Michigan funding continues to move Muskegon County forward. The Program notified County officials of a $30,000 commitment for strategic business and marketing plan development. The County is excited to see what the potential for agricultural commodities holds at the Port of Muskegon.
